Always ask

When you get a new job don't forget "it is because they wanted you / chose you for the position." That is always a great time to ask for even more.

A friend of mine had been promoted to Professor at a top University in the country. They gave him a substantial payrise, however he didn't think it was enough for the work he had done and his age.

So following the system in my "Negotiate your Salary" book he found out the process, who could sign off to give him more, reminded them that he had other job offers etc. Eventually he received an extra 16% above the rise they had given and now he knows how the system works for his Salary Negotiation Dossier next year.
