Football Managers-salary negotiations

In January 2008 two high profile football managers substantially increased their earnings. Newcastle needed a new manager and somehow Harry Redknapp the Portsmouth manager became the 4/7 favourite with the bookies. Harry was offered the job and took 24 hours to think about it. While this was going on he managed to negotiate an increase in his salery at Portsmouth by £1m.

Kevin Keegan was then offered the job. He got a very high salary and at the same time negotiated 15% of any increase in the gate receipts at Newcastle. The 15% is known as a negotiable variable, an extra.

How are you positioning yourself and what variables have you got?

Will - New position. "You can't be a preacher in your own town"

Sometimes you have to move jobs to get paid what you are worth. Will a friend of mine worked for his employers for over 34 years. They didn't think they had to pay him extra salary. He positioned himself as an expert, joined the association for his specialism and became the treasurer. He met lots of people who believed he was the best. When a headhunter called they recommended Will. Will has just doubled his salary at age 56. Everything is negotiable, but you have to put the energy and effort in.
